Every year beginning in 2012, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) celebrates World Radio Day on February 13.

The idea originated from Jorge Alvarez, president of the Spanish Radio Academy. In his “Message for World Radio Day,” Alvarez reminds us that “Since its origins, radio has been shown to be the most useful medium of social communication for humanity.”

This year’s theme is radio’s past, present, and future, focusing on radio’s incredible history, its ongoing impact, and its economic challenges moving forward with increasing competition from digital media and emerging technologies.

Austin’s community station, KOOP 91.7 FM, is a living example of independent radio in action, exemplifying the sentiments of Alvarez and UNESCO, standing hand in hand with broadcasters worldwide and here in Central Texas as we celebrate World Radio Day 2024.
