COVER ART OF THE WEEK: Influential British post-punk and art punk band Wire released their third album, “154,” to critical acclaim, with it peaking at #39 in the UK album charts. It continued the creative progression started on “Chairs Missing,” their second album, away from a minimalist sound to a lusher, edgy, at times pop sound. They disbanded shortly after its release but reunited in 1985. Released on various labels under the EMI imprint, it featured a cover design concept by band members Graham Lewis and Bruce Gilbert and art direction by Dave Dragon. (Click on image to enlarge)
DUSTY DIAMOND OF THE WEEK (a vintage gem from the STD vaults): Gentleman Jesse and His Men were an Atlanta based power pop band active in the mid to late 00s. Fronted by guitarist and vocalist Jesse Smith AKA Gentleman Jesse, they released one album and several singles between 2006 and 2010. Gentleman Jesse still performs live as a solo act as well as with the band. “I Don’t Wanna Know” is a twangy slice of power pop laden with catchy riffing and some nice vocal harmonies. It appeared in 2006 on their first release, a three song EP on Douchemaster Records. Listen to it here:
