On Saturday, October 5, I got to see something I’d been waiting for over 20 years – I got to see Something Corporate perform live. This was a band that contributed massively to my middle school experience and has continued to influence me to this day (my friend from high school and I still call each other PRP and GBK).

I wore my astronaut earrings and stood in the crowd (behind disappointingly bored platinum attendees who only cared about talking and taking selfies) and jammed along with hundreds or even thousands of others who all reverted right back to their childhood emo days from the opening note of “I Woke Up In a Car.”

After the set, I was lucky enough to get to interview the band. I was not, however, lucky enough to capture it on video OR audio, as my phone overheated in the extreme October sun and cut off right after I said “I’m here with Something Corporate!” During the interview we talked about Austin (drummer Brian Ireland lives here), the year 2002, and John Partington’s poetry within the “Revolution on Canvas” volumes. It was really a great interview, and I wish you could all see it.

Thankfully, I’m friends with some highly talented photographers, one of whom happened to walk up during the interview and capture this photo. It’s something I will cherish forever since the interview lives only in my mind now.

Their set at ACL was one of the final dates of their Out Of Office tour, drawing to a close on October 12 in San Francisco. In November, they will embark on Andrew McMahon’s Holiday From Real Cruise, celebrating all of Andrew’s projects (SoCo, Jack’s Mannequin, and The Wilderness).
