Some FEATURED ARTISTS on this week’s Stronger Than Dirt (Saturday, July 23, 8-10pm) include Peter and the Wolves, Pagans, Plastic Bertrand, Chris Spedding, Devo, Mydolls, Quincy, Thee Oh Sees, Ugly Beats, lots of new music, as well as the weekly Dusty Diamond.
COVER ART OF THE WEEK: OK, so this week’s pick isn’t really about the cover art as much as the 70s cover vibe. Richie Heinen (real name Riccardo Heinen) was an Italian radio personality who released a couple of singles between the years 1973 and 1977. “Beach Freak” is crazy Euro glam with a T. Rex groove and some bizarre production flourishes. The flipside, “Funky D.J.,” is an equally entertaining bit of Euro weirdness. A very cool single indeed. It was released in 1977 on the Disco Più label with an uncredited cover photo of Heinen. Click image to enlarge.
LAST WEEK’S DUSTY DIAMOND (a forgotten gem from the STD vaults): The Yum Yums are a power pop punk band from Oslo, Norway. They have been active since the early 90s and have released numerous singles and albums. “Girls Like That” is a driving power popper with super catchy riffs and crisp guitar work. It appeared in 1994 on their first release, a 7” EP on Screaming Apple. Listen to it here:
