The show focuses on Southern Soul of the ’60s and early ’70s, before black music became a strictly urban format. Core artists include Joe Tex, Joe Simon, Solomon Burke, Otis Redding, etc. In addition to the great vocalists, the show hopes to spotlight the great house bands at American Sound Studios, Stax, Hi, FAME, & Muscle Shoals Sound. Other performers of interest include white southerners writing soulful songs mixing Country/Soul/Rock. Examples include Joe South, Tony Joe White, & Bobbie Gentry. Show heroes include Dan Penn, Chips Moman, Arthur Alexander, Shelby Singleton, Steve Cropper, and Rick Hall.
