Some FEATURED ARTISTS on this week’s Stronger Than Dirt (Saturday, October 26, 8-10pm) include Roxy Music, Joe Jackson, Explosives, Prisoners, Miracle Workers, Lida Husik, Slant 6, Smugglers, Pipettes, lots of new music as well as the weekly Dusty Diamond.
COVER ART OF THE WEEK: The Explosives, a punky new wave band from Austin, were one of five Austin bands featured on the 1979 “Live at Raul’s” album. Active mainly in the late 70s and early 80s, they were also the backing band for Roky Erickson from 1979-1981 and played with him again in the mid 2000s. Their “Push the Button” EP, released in 1980 on Black Hole Records, featured a design by Flathead Studios along with photos by Tom McMahon. (Click on image to enlarge)
DUSTY DIAMOND OF THE WEEK (a vintage gem from the STD vaults): The Chrome Cranks are a bluesy punk based in New York City though they hailed originally from Cincinnati. They toured extensively in the 90s and released several albums and singles before disbanding in 1998. They reunited in the late 00s to tour and released an album of new material in 2012. “Way-Out Lover” is a smoky, swampy slab of blues punk that channels in equal parts Cramps and Scientists with some nifty T-Rex riffing and explosive bursts of guitar. It appeared in 1993 on a single on Sympathy for the Record Industry. Listen to it here:
