Some FEATURED ARTISTS on this week’s Stronger Than Dirt (Saturday,
September 7, 8-10pm) include Jacques Dutronc, Giorgio, The Quick, Non
Compos Mentis, X, Edith Nylon, Gang of Four, Young Marble Giants, Donnas,
lots of new music as well as the weekly Dusty Diamond.
COVER ART OF THE WEEK: Punk legends X released their debut album “Los
Angeles” in 1980 on Slash Records. The front cover with its burning X remains
one of the most iconic in punk rock. According to singer/bassist John Doe Slash
Records and magazine owner Bob Biggs built an 8-foot X out of plywood, took it
out to the desert, set it on fire and filmed it. The cover comes from a still from the
film. There was a bit of controversy upon release because many people assumed
it was a burning cross. The back cover and inner record sleeve included band
photos by Frank Gargani. Read an interview with Doe about the making of the
cover here: https://diffuser.fm/cover-stories-x-los-angeles/ (Click on image to

DUSTY DIAMOND OF THE WEEK (a vintage gem from the STD vaults): The
Dog Faced Hermans were an anarcho punk band from Edinburgh, Scotland that
relocated to Amsterdam. They were active from 1986 until their break-up in 1995,
and released several albums and singles. “Timebomb” is a Jekyll and Hyde
nugget with a melodic, quiet middle section sandwiched by noisier post punk
sections. Great vocals (and trumpet solo!) by lead singer Marion Coutts. It
appeared in 1990 on the “Too Much for the Red Ticker” single on the Demon
Radge label. Listen to it here:
