Some FEATURED ARTISTS on this week’s Stronger Than Dirt (Saturday, August 15, 8-10pm) include DMZ and the Lyres (RIP Jeff “Monoman” Connolly), Animals, Brian Eno, Magazine, Swell Maps, Squire, Nikki and the Corvettes, Oblivians, lots of new music as well as the weekly Dusty Diamond.
COVER ART OF THE WEEK: Influential British punk/post-punk band Swell Maps brought a DIY aesthetic not just to the music they created, but also to the cover designs of most of the records they released. The artwork and photography duties were shared among the various members including Epic Soundtracks (Kevin Godfrey), Nikki Sudden (Adrian Godfrey), Jowe Head (Stephen Bird), and Biggles Books (Richard Scaldwell). Their first release, the “Read About Seymour” EP, was released in 1977 on Rather Records and resissued the next year on Rough Trade. The cover art was done by Epic (the Artist) and was featured as well on the 1999 “International Rescue” collection on Alive Records.
DUSTY DIAMOND OF THE WEEK (a vintage gem from the STD vaults): The Rock *A* Teens were a swampy, garage-y Dixie-fried indie rock band from Atlanta. They formed in the mid 90s and released several records until disbanding in 2002. They reunited briefly in 2018 to record an album. “Down with People” is a gritty, sweaty workout with a driving beat and revival fervor. It appeared in 1996 on their first release, a self-titled album on Daemon Records. Listen to it here:
