Some FEATURED ARTISTS on this week’s Stronger Than Dirt (Saturday, August 22, 8-10pm) include Love, October Country, Hector, Lene Lovich, Elli et Jacno, Hüsker Dü, Ladytron, La Femme, lots of new music as well as the weekly Dusty Diamond.

COVER ART OF THE WEEK: The Insect Surfers are a long-running band originally from Washington, D.C. and later Los Angeles. Formed in the late 70s their music is influenced by 60s psychedelic surf and 70s punk. They released their first single in 1980 on the Virginia based Wasp label. It’s cover, based on an “Endless Summer” movie poster, was designed by bandmembers David Arnson and David Peterson along with manager and Wasp Records owner Bill Asp.

DUSTY DIAMOND OF THE WEEK (a vintage gem from the STD vaults): To be honest, I don’t know much about the Paper Tulips. They were a garage-y punk band from Long Beach CA that was active from 1990 through 1995. “Sugar Lift” is from a 1995 Flipside Records single I discovered while browsing the singles crates in Sound Exchange. Loved the DIY cover and gave it a spin and the rest is history. It’s a gritty, loping rocker with catchy riffing and a nice little quasi psychedelic break toward he end that works perfectly. You can listen to it here:
