Some FEATURED ARTISTS on this week’s Stronger Than Dirt (Saturday, April 18, 8-10pm) include Val McKenna, Gene Clarke, Iron Cross, John Cooper Clarke, Cigarettes, Keys, Polyrock, L7, Peach Kelli Pop, lots of new music as well as the weekly Dusty Diamond.
COVER ART OF THE WEEK: John Cooper Clarke AKA the “punk poet” is a British poet and comedian known for his caustic wit as well as his work in the late 70s and early 80s with punk and post-punk bands. Well into his 70s now he is still performing live and has released some recordings of his spoken word performances as recently as 2023. “Post-War Glamour Girl” is a classic JCC tune with sardonic lyrics and backing music by the Invisible Girls. It appeared in 1978 on his “Disguise in Love” album and as a single, both on CBS. The single, shown here, featured an uncredited collage on the cover. (Click on image to enlarge)

DUSTY DIAMOND OF THE WEEK (a vintage gem from the STD vaults): The Coachwhips were one of many bands associated with the brilliant and prolific multi-instrumentalist and songwriter John Dwyer (Osees, Damaged Bug). Active mainly in the early and mid 00s they were known for unvarnished garage rock and punk. “Harlow’s Muscle of Love” is a noisy, fast out of the gates pedal to the metal rager with Dwyer on guitar and vocals. Intense, but in a good way. It appeared in 2003 on the “Bangers vs. Fuckers” album on Narnack Records. Listen to it here:
