Some FEATURED ARTISTS on this week’s Stronger Than Dirt (Saturday, May 10, 8-10pm) include the Carrie Nations, Rocket from the Tombs, Pere Ubu (RIP David Thomas), Tubeway Army, Bangles, Three O’Clock, Les Calamités, Polysics, Neils Children, Public Practice, lots of new music as well as the weekly Dusty Diamond.

COVER ART OF THE WEEK: Before they hit it big in the mid 80s, The Bangles were an integral part of the Los Angeles Paisley Underground scene. Formed in 1981 as The Bangs, they were forced to change their name when they discovered another band had the name registered. Their 1982 self-titled EP containing the song “The Real World” was originally released on cassette under the Bangs moniker on Faulty Records. After the name change it was rereleased the same year on vinyl, also on Faulty and later ion I.R.S. The covers featured a design by Ewa Wojciak and photography by Bob Seideman.

DUSTY DIAMOND OF THE WEEK (a vintage gem from the STD vaults): After Bikini Kill’s breakup in 1998 Kathleen Hanna formed the electronic rock band Le Tigre with Johanna Fateman and Sadie Benning. Their music mixed elements of Riot Grrl, punk, electronica, sampling and pop with leftist and LGBT friendly social and political commentary. “My My Metrocard” is an electro punk party stomper with a 60s garage backbeat and includes a crude mention of Rudy Giuliani. It appeared in 1999 on their first release, a self-titled album on the Mr. Lady label. Listen to it here:
