If you’re unfamiliar with Poppy, you might not expect the kind of music she creates.
The 30-year-old singer began her internet career as a surrealist YouTuber (my boyfriend was an OG fan of the “I’m Poppy” video). And while she looks like she might run in the same musical circles as Charli XCX or Grimes, she’s actually much more at home amongst the likes of Knocked Loose and even Memphis May Fire.
Her They’re All Around Us tour came to Emo’s on Thursday night, accompanied by opener House of Protection (two members of rock band Fever 333), who were themselves quite a powerhouse. It was their last night on the tour and the duo brought the house down.

Poppy played a 16-song set joined by her three-man band in ninja outfits and masks, a Poppy doll, and an omniscient voice.
While most of the songs fit the metal bill, “Scary Mask” and “Concrete” were by far the most schizophrenic in terms of sound. “Concrete” even featured a breakdown reminiscent of the Beach Boys.
She went offstage between every song, which I can only believe was to grab some water (or snake sperm) after screaming and, again, you would not expect such guttural sounds from that tiny frame. I actually thought to myself at one point during the show “I bet she can do that David Draiman barking thing” and then I swear to you, SHE DID.
After this tour concludes in a few days, Poppy will be heading out to Europe to tour with BABYMETAL. What an epic tour that will be. I’m not jealous at all.
Long story short, I love Poppy. She is the epitome of not judging a book by its cover and also I want to be her when I grow up even if she’s younger than me.
