Atlanta Cobb is (a) Music Industry Mentor and professional with over 13 years in the music business. She, along with three others, will be presenting the panel 5 Things They Don’t Teach You In (Music Business) School on Tuesday, March 11 at SXSW.

First of all, I went to music business school (Austin Community College actually has an exceptional program) and I’m so interested in what can be added to the curriculum to help students shine. If you could teach ONE class, what would it be? What would your capstone project be?

That’s awesome! I love the look of the Music Business course!

However, I’d love to teach a class on Mindset in Music (I already have a masterclass on this which I teach remotely via my MIM Business Course inside my Artist Development Membership) and it always, always goes down well with students! Over 100 have taken it so far, within the last 9 months.

What has been your most rewarding experience as a music business educator?

Whenever a client tells me they’ve just been able to quit their 9-5 job and go full time in Music, all because I helped them develop a business off of their creative talents which has enabled them to generate sustainable cash flow, so they can now afford to make music everyday.

It reminds me how much of an impact on real lives, that I am a part of helping and changing – from cross the world, with the work I do inside Music Industry Mentor.

Do you think it’s necessary as a student of the music business (officially or unofficially) to learn multiple aspects of the business, from law to sync to production?

I do! It all helps. I’m glad I took a production diploma, as well as a singing one as a student – even though I work on the business side of things now.

Law is a whole other ball game in itself, but it certainly helps having at least a basic understanding of it as you’ll always come by deal memos and contracts within the job regardless.

If you’re a music business student, the more you can know across the industry – the easier it’ll be to navigate.
That’s why I have such a holistic approach to all my members inside Music Industry Mentor.

Can you tell me a bit about Music Industry Mentor and other mentorship programs available?

How did you get into this business and what advice do you have for people looking to get into music marketing from a non-artist standpoint?
I started out as an OG fan of Florence & The Machine. I created one of her very first fan-made fan pages ‘The Florence and The Machine Army‘ along with a few other fans I met online. That led me to meeting Florence > meeting Florence’s team in New York backstage at a show > that led me to gaining some work aged 15 at London Fashion Week with her Creative Director, and I never stopped working since.

Best advice is – always learn from the people who are sitting where you want to sit. Who have a proven track record of success, and achieving current, real-world results. I can coach musicians on building audiences online, because I’m building one myself to over 100k right now.

Do not take advice from anyone else but these kinds of people. That’s the biggest hack for making sure you move forward as fast as possible. The rest is – stay patient, don’t overthink it and always persevere.

Remember: this is a people’s business, so be a nice person. Give more than you take. Have great communication.

Is there anything else that attendees can look forward to during the panel?

A well-structured panel, with some a solid mixture of thought-leaders from various backgrounds of experience. Expect some audience participation and tangible nuggets. We want our audience to walk away having learned something thought-provoking.

Don’t miss the 5 Things They Don’t Teach You In (Music Business) School panel on Tuesday, March 11 from 4-5pm in the Austin Convention Center!
