These faculty doctorate jazz groups are always some of the best. They’re stocked with folks who are steeped in their knowledge and in the techniques of the genre. This ensemble from San Marcos way is no different and, to hear it told, are one of the best. Covering a variety of pop arrangements, this rare appearance of the group should not be passed up.
Wednesday, 4.5.23 at 8 p.m.: Ally Venable w/ Early Times, Antone’s Nightclub, $20, Blues
Ally Venable (seen above) recently opened for living legend Buddy Guy on his recent stop in town, and that’s really the only endorsement anybody should need. Come down Wednesday night to see this killer young six-string player and find out for yourself that the blues are still alive and well, here and now.
Friday, 4.7.23 at 6:30 p.m.: Henri Herbert, C-Boy’s, Free, Boogie-Woogie/Blues
An enormous talent on the keys, UK born piano player Henri Herbert is taking Austin one key at a time. With his once-in-a-generation talent and groove, he is a sight to be seen behind a piano. Having played with Jim Jones and just about everyone else across Europe and the U.S., come see him rock the house this Friday night.
