Hard Proof

Hard Proof | 10pm, Monday, 11/14 | C-Boy’s | $10 | Jazz/Funk

Afrobeat afficionatos through and through, Hard Proof brings a long-honed sound and style to C-Boy’s Monday night. Rightfully earning its place next to the other premier horn sections found around town, they’re twice as good live as they are on record. A tight, cohesive ensemble that brings forth a groove that will for sure fuel a fierce and fun live experience.

Angela Strehli | 7pm, Tuesday, 11/15–Wednesday, 11/16 | Antone’s | $35 | Blues

A jewel of the original Austin music scene, Angela Strehli has long been established as a premier voice in blues music, both as a vocalist and beyond. One of the original three “Antone’s Women,” alongside Marcia Ball and Lou Ann Barton, she will be performing with them Tuesday night in celebration of her new album release. If you’re interested in double-dipping, she will be there again Wednesday night with even more Antone’s legends like Sue Foley and Jimmie Vaughan. Backed by the Texas Horns, and joined by other great local guests like Eve Monsees and Lindsay Beaver, these will be two hard-to-miss shows.

Rocket Cinema & KOOP Present: True Stories | 8pm, Wednesday 11/16 | Meanwhile Brewing | Cult Cinema

Do you like Talking Heads? Did you know they made a movie, right here in Texas? Take a tour with frontman David Byrne of a strange small Texas town on the eve of the state’s sesquicentennial as he showcases familiar faces and catchy tunes. Inspired by real tabloid headlines, this overlooked classic—presented al fresco—shouldn’t be missed. Hosted by Rocket Cinema and KOOP at Meanwhile Brewing Company, this event is pet and kid friendly, with a variety of food and drinks available on the premises. Hope to see you there!

Drakulas, Gentlemen Rogues, Glass Shadows | 10pm, Thursday, 11/17 | Chess Club | $10 | New Wave/Punk

If you’re in the mood for something darker this week, Thursday night’s show will have you covered. This showcase features a trio of great local bands, all dedicated to bringing forth a sinister synth sound. Come for the aggressive on-stage antics of Drakulas and their driving, slick sound coupled with the pop-punk stylings of Gentlemen Rogue, and come even earlier for the brooding atmosphere of Glass Shadows.

Deadeye | 9pm, Saturday, 11/19 | Antone’s | $20 | Psychedelic Rock

We’re ending this week much the same as last with another stellar cover band. Grateful Dead cover bands are a dime a dozen, but these guys are worth every dime it costs to get in. Always drawing a fun and friendly crowd, their goofy groovy energy will be sure to draw you in and keep you planted, content to sway along and then rock out at a moment’s notice.
