Some FEATURED ARTISTS on this week’s LIVE Stronger Than Dirt (Saturday, August 28, 8-10pm) include Faine Jade, Silver Apples, Zolar X, Avengers (see promo), Magazine, Yachts, Lori and the Chameleons, Primitives, Judy’s, Gomez (Austin), new music by Spllit (Baton Rouge), Lily Konigsberg (Brooklyn), Qlowski (London/Italy), and Freak Genes (UK), as well as the weekly Dusty Diamond.

PICTURE SLEEVE OF THE WEEK: Gomez were a 90s punk band from Austin with several singles and one self-titled album. Drummer Brandon Burke provided the artwork for the LP, a high contrast black and white image of Yoda (not a gremlin!), with half on the front, the other half on the back. “We couldn’t afford a gatefold” appears on the spine next to the band name. A fold-out poster is included with full cover art on one side, and a band photo by Greggae Giles on the other. The album was released in 1994 on the local Little Deputy Records label.

LAST WEEK’S DUSTY DIAMOND (a forgotten gem from the STD vaults): The Satans were a short-lived mid 90s garage punk band from Austin. They released but one EP and a few tracks on various compilations. “Get Off My Back” is an uptempo smoker with snarling vocals and hot guitar licks. It was recorded by Ben Lutin at Sweatbox (downstairs from the old KOOP studio on E. 5th St.), and appeared in 1994 on a self-titled EP on Existential Vacuum Records. The cover art was done by singer Hunter Wesson. The EP included an insert with a band photo by Sean McGowan. Listen to it here:
