Van Mary’s newest single, “Hug” captures the essence of this lonely, isolated year. Produced by Walker Lukens, a fellow Austinite, the song’s dream pop arrangements add an interesting layer to what could’ve been a melancholic ballad. The catchy vocals, fuzzed out guitar, and shimmering synths end up feeling like a hopeful anthem. Although the idea of hugging our friends at a show seems so distant in the future, “Hug” offers a reminder that we all sometimes have to pretend that things are back to normal and that’s okay.
