Mr. Hymn, a project from local multi-instrumentalist Dominic Sena, has recently released the reverb-drenched single, “Magnolia.” Combining elements of dream pop with a classic indie-alternative vibe, the arrangement demonstrates Sena’s influences from artists such as Cate le Bon, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Alex G. Although he has released music under Mr.Hymn since around 2017, this is the first track he’s written since recently moving to Austin. When asked about its composition, Sena says he wondered, “…as I was writing the lyrics whether or not Magnolia was a person, still not really sure. It feels like a loaded word in my head because it has some sense of nostalgia and the tone feels like it’s longing for something lost.” The catchy melodies and shimmering guitar riffs bring a sense of wonder and mystery to the track that invites the listener to find their own meaning and leaves them curious about what Mr.Hymn has coming next.
