Austin Area Heritage Council:
Founded in 1993, the Austin Area Heritage Council coordinates Austin’s annual MLK Celebration, a public education event that celebrates the life of the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. and honors his legacy of inspiring ongoing civil rights work in central Texas. In this In Touch Interview, AAHC Volunteer Coordinator Para Agobga reflects on the liberation work that remains in the wake of MLK’s profound example and reminds listeners that “there is no more perfect union than equality and equity.” Agobga also discusses the organization’s youth education events, which teach young people methods for expression and recognize the creative contributions of central Texas’s next generation of social and cultural powerhouses. The council’s 2021 MLK Celebration respects current COVID-19 surges across Texas and will be held via drive-in or virtually, online. Details for registration and viewing follow:

United Way Austin:
Community wellness organization United Way’s Austin chapter has been busy during the COVID-19 crisis to help keep friends and neighbors financially stable and to make sure Austin’s pre-K youth stay on course with their childhood development and education as much as possible. Director of Events and Engagement Jordan speaks with In Touch Interviews’ Lynn Cowles about UWA’s upcoming live-streamed event to honor the contributions of the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr., whose advocacy for and representation of communities of color has been a huge inspiration for UWA. The organization has also created resources for community education and engagement outside of the MLK DAY event, like a self-guided walking tour of some of Austin’s important spaces in Black history.
