Iconic Texas musician Jerry Jeff Walker passed away here in Austin on October 23, 2020. Jerry Jeff wrote and sang beautiful love songs, dance hall anthems, and story songs in the folk tradition. His legendary full band performances rocked, rendering his music defiant of any strict categorization, which of course made it Austin music. The Jerry Jeff sound kept Austin weird for the half century that he called this place home.
His “Mr. Bojangles” would be recorded by everyone from Bob Dylan to Sammy Davis, Jr., but he was never content to allow that to be his only contribution to American popular culture. He worked the road hard, recorded dozens of albums, and still found time to immerse himself in the musical community he loved.
KOOP thanks him for his meaningful contributions and his independent spirit. We mourn his loss and honor his memory. Rest easy, Jerry Jeff.
KOOP’s The Singer and the Song will celebrate the music of Jerry Jeff Walker the full hour on Saturday, October 31, 3pm to 4pm, and listen for other Jerry Jeff recognitions throughout the broadcast schedule in the days ahead.
