Show #598: James Reese Europe!

Show #598: James Reese Europe!

Tune in February 3 for the beginning of our month long salute to Black History Month!

We'll hear Ragtime and Jazz records from the 1910s and 1920s, and hear how Ragtime morophed into Jazz.

This week, we'll salute the birthday of Lt. James Reese Europe.

He was a pioneering black bandleader (he played with the dancing team of Irene and Vernon Castle, and led a band in during The Great War).

Thankfully, Europe made more than thirty recordings (the first black bandleader to record for a major label).  We'll hear selections from Europe's Society Orchestra and the "Hell Fighters" Band.

Thank you for listening!
